A Spirituality & Psychology workshop | Part One

Shri Dhyanyogi said, Remain focused and attached to the effort and have no fear, doubt or worry.

Those of us on the spiritual path know that this is the ultimate in truth— that we need to keep our eye on the prize and not be pulled away by our fears. And yet the fears come, and sometimes so strongly that it is hard to keep our focus.

In this first of a two-part Spirituality & Psychology workshop, long-time disciple of Shri Anandi Ma and clinical psychologist Dr. Ellen Balis (Ishwari) will help us cultivate an accepting and loving relationship with the aspects of ourselves that experience fear, instead of viewing these aspects as signs of weakness. In part two, later this year, Anandi Ma and Dileepji will take us deeper into the spiritual meanings of fear and how to release it completely.

On the spiritual path, we sometimes misunderstand the role of the ego and emotions in our lives and try to control them instead of engaging the ego to help us release and heal from emotional wounding. In this first workshop we will explore this confusion and find the courage to open our hearts, melting the pain we carry instead of seeing it as a weakness to destroy.

Freedom from fear

Shortly after I met Anandi Ma, I was visiting a family cabin on a lake. Around me I heard the lighthearted laughter of family members diving into the water, but I was frozen. I had a lifelong fear of going headfirst. As I stood on the edge of the dock with my toes curled tightly around the wooden planks, I remembered Anandi Ma telling me that my fears are false. When she said it, I barely understood what she could possibly mean. But in this moment hovering over the lake, her words came back to me and I knew nothing bad would happen if I jumped. As if there were springs on my feet I dove into the water headfirst! The breakthrough of courage came from a combination of her loving reassurance, how strongly she communicated that my fears held no power, and the psychological aspect of receiving her kindness instead of me angrily telling myself to simply “Get over it!" This is a small example of how spirituality and psychology together can free us from our emotional beliefs and blocks.

Ellen Balis, EdD, has been a therapist for nearly fifty years and has trained many other therapists. Twenty years ago, she began giving workshops with Anandi Ma and Dileepji, to bring together spirituality with psychology, exploring emotions, relationships, forgiveness, and more.
