Honoring our ancestors

Shraddh is a significant observance in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to honoring and remembering our ancestors and departed loved ones. It is believed that during this time, their souls come closer to the earth, seeking our love and blessings. By offering food, charity, and performing rituals, we support their peace and spiritual evolution.

"Pitru Tarpana" means "offering to the ancestors." The Pitru Tarpana ritual, which we perform on the final day of Shraddh, involves specific offerings intended to aid our ancestors in the spiritual realms and harmonize our relationships with them.

Preparing for the ceremony

Gather materials  A simple list of needed items is down below (and in your registration confirmation email), items such as black sesame seeds and water, which play a key role in the offerings.

Write down names You will be provided with printable charts so you can fill in the names of your ancestors for easy reference as you make the offerings.

Clear a space You need to be able to sit in such a way that you can turn toward each of four directions during the puja. Since you will be turning in this way, it might be easier to sit on the floor or a stool rather than a chair. It is best to not use your meditation asan for this puja.

What to expect

This ceremony (puja) is a series of offerings and prayers designed to aid our ancestors' spiritual evolution and create peace. The experience will be guided step by step, making it accessible to those new to this puja and helpful even for those familiar with it.

As we do the puja along with Anandi Ma and Dileepji, following our chart of ancestors, recalling their names, making the offerings, we are creating space for these souls who have passed on. As the ceremony ends, our concentrated effort can give way to a sense of peace and healing. Often participants come away from the ceremony saying "I'm so glad I did this."
